North American Wensleydales

Stevensville, Montana

Welcome to White Feather Ranch. We are located in western Montana between the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain ranges. The winters in the valley are mild and allow for lambing in late February and early March. We raise both white and black North American Wensleydales and do so with the invaluable assistance of our Border Collies.

While visiting this web site you will see a sheep quite different than the breeds more common to most areas. You will meet a unique breed, stunning in looks with versatile characteristics. Wensleydale rams are particularly desirable as their cross with other breeds adds size, fleece quality and a ‘kemp killer”.

An important feature of the breed is the uniquely purled and lustrous fleece which is said to be the finest and most valuable luster long wool in the world. The staple length measures 20 to 30 cm with a Bradford count of 44 to 48 (approximately 33 to 35 micrometers).

A question you might ask if you are thinking about starting a sheep business or adding to your flock is: all breeds have some significant disadvantage. What about Wensleydales? Answer: they tend to become addictive.

The intent as you journey through this site is that the information will provide you a greater understanding of the Wensleydale breed of sheep and the beautiful fiber that they produce.  I hope that you enjoy the experience!
